Proposed Installation of Bulk Diesel Storage Tanks at Durban Container Terminal Pier 1, Port of Durban
Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is proposing the installation and operation of bulk diesel storage tanks at Durban Container Terminal (DCT) Pier 1, located within the Port of Durban, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, KwaZulu‑Natal Province.
The proposed project entails installing two 35 cubic meter above-ground bulk diesel storage tanks and associated infrastructure to support terminal operations, improve fuel security, and enhance operational efficiency at DCT Pier 1. Diesel will primarily be used for port-related activities, including equipment operation and backup power requirements.
The proposed development is subject to South Africa’s environmental regulatory framework and triggers one or more listed activities in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (as amended). As a result, a Basic Assessment (BA) process is required.
USK Consulting Africa has been appointed to undertake the Basic Assessment Process, which aims to identify, assess, and where possible mitigate the potential environmental, social, and economic impacts associated with the proposed installation and operation of the bulk diesel storage tanks.
